"Harvest" This picture is not quite finished. It is a portrait of cornfield flowers once abundant and taken for granted as part of the everyday. The stook shape provokes a folk memory, and this together with the atmosphere and composition recall representations of similar subjects, be they photographs, paintings or memories. "Harvest" is to have a companion, a "swathe" cut from a hay meadow, which in turn is leading me to more abstract ideas of wildlife corridors, or pockets, or islands which humans are leaving to nature. "Beauties of Glen Isla" This picture is also not yet finished. I need to wait until the mountain pansies - viola lutea - are flowering again, so that I can paint portraits of many many more individuals, to show their incredible diversity. View details of "Beauties of Glen Isla" >>>

My main project this summer is to represent the plants and wildlife of my local estuarine nature reserve. This will involve photographing, sketching and experiencing the flowers as they bloom through the season, in order to portray as truthfully as I can the unique plant communities and the birds and other creatures that belong there. I have three large pictures in mind, but I'm sure there will be more, Watch this space!
