I've always been drawing and painting, and always
been passionate about the natural world, and for one to express the
other has always been second nature to me. When I spent a year in Sydney,
Australia I was so bowled over by the parallel universe of the Australian
flora, that I set about at once to draw it. I exhibited my drawings in the
Palm House at the Botanic Gardens in Sydney at the end of the year. It was
a truly enjoyable show, and, as I set myself up at a table drawing my specimens
in the venue, I got a tremendous buzz from meeting my audience whilst
working.
I was at Canterbury College of Art in the 1980's (gaining a BA (Hons) degree
in Fine Art) still in the days of Art School Abstact Expressionism - but spent
many of my days cycling through the Kent countryside enjoying the nightingales
and painting in the open air, or going up to London to set up my easel in front
of the Old Masters in the National Gallery. I then went on to do a post graduate
diploma in the History of Art at Oxford University, where I concentrated on the
Renaissance.
I've been based in Edinburgh for 22 years or so now, mostly bringing up a family
and teaching the violin, playing it a bit too, and still painting - exhibiting
in various venues including many times in Edinburgh's Queen's Hall, at the Edinburgh
Festival Fringe, down at the Oxford Art Festival, and galleries in Edinburgh.
Most recently, having a proper studio again at last, I'm trying to be more or
less full time as an artist, enabling my lifetime's interests and preoccupations
to come together and flourish.I am currently exhibiting at SOC, Waterston House,
Aberlady, East Lothian, from Saturday March 22nd to Sunday May 25th.
